Choices…..

  The choices that we make in life are never easy, and we will face many of them in our lifetime. 
Life is made up of choices. We may not be aware of all of them, but they are always present. How we live our lives is determined by the consequences of every choice we make. Our choices plays a vast part in all our lives, whether we like it or not.

We all have to make choices. From the time we are young, until our latter years. The choices we make, affect our lives in many ways. Some choices will stay with us forever. I made some choices that were wrong, very wrong. My choices put everyone in a situation I would rather not have liked them to be in. …I chose to take a motorcycle on a highway, just because I felt it will get me to my destination on time, because he was on top speed and it was raining, the motorcycle man didn’t see the vehicle coming and they both collided throwing me off the highway, I got admitted to the hospital for a month. I never kept the appointment but grateful to have kept my life. I had a choice to wait till the rain subsided or take a cab but I chose the short cut that almost cost me my life and put everyone I care about in so much stress.

But that was a long time ago and I know better now. I haven’t made a choice like that again, but every time I feel I have an appointment to keep and am in a hurry,  I am reminded of that choice I made and immediately I reconsider the choice am about to make.

Often times I hear people say “poverty is a choice!  Is it really a choice? Do people decide to remain poor for the rest of their lives? Did they make the decision to remain poor themselves or life made the decision for them? What about those people that toil day and night, only to rise up early and eat the bread of sorrow late at night? Would it be said they are lazy or life chose not to favour them?
What about the rich? Did they chose to be rich or situations and circumstances made them rich? Everyone is entitled to answer these questions based on their own conviction, but one thing I would like to mention is that, “Lifestyle choices dictate income levels, not the other way around”.

No one chooses to be poor. Solomon’s explanations on choosing to live in poverty from proverbs 10- proverbs 22, are quite deep and require divine insight to truly understand what he was talking about. We human beings, without a doubt, make decisions that are always to our advantages, most times not considering the disadvantages. So, why would we want to choose to live a life of poverty when we can live a pleasant life of wealth?  I would not believe that people would choose to live in poverty.

I believe that for every choice you make, you face the consequences. You can decide to go to school or not, believe in a religion or not, make an honest living or decide to live by swindling others, and many more. For example, if you choose not to go to school, you don’t receive proper education, you may not be able to get a decent job or career( although your skills can still make way for you) and you face money issues for the rest of your life. The choices we make help to guide our lives and shape us into who we want to be. We control our own lives, no one can make our decisions for us, and the ultimate choice to live our lives lies within us.

I think that people tend to forget about or ignore the freedom that they have to make choices for themselves and decide what kind of life they wish to live. People let society tell them what they should be and what they should do, but it shouldn’t be this way. We all have hopes, wishes, and dreams, and we are entitled to achieve them. 

Think hard before you act. The choices you make, can affect you and the ones you love for the rest of your lives.
