Seek His Face!

Seek His Face and not His gifts- Psalm 27:8

To seek the face of the Lord means to seek his presence, to desire to be in his presence. For everytime we draw closer to God, we are seeking his face but we gain access to see his face because we are in his presence. Jeremiah 4 :8 said “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

Are God’s children always in his presence? Do they all desire him? This is not always the case. In as much as God is omnipotent and ever near us and everything we do, we are not always in his presence. It’s either we are busy chasing after other things and make excuses for them or we become so neglectful of him and give no thoughts to him nor put our trust in him. That’s why there’s a constant call for us to seek his face daily- 1 chronicles 22:19.

Ever wondered why the planet Mercury is hot, whereas the dwarf world Pluto is cold. That’s because Mercury is close to the sun and Pluto is a long way off. A planet’s temperature and climate are determined by its proximity to the sun.

There’s an important spiritual principle here. As a redeemed child of God, your spiritual temperature is determined by how close you are to Jesus. You say, ‘I wish I were closer to the Lord.’ The truth is that you are as close to him as you desire to be, decide to be, and discipline yourself to be. Your pursuit of God reveals your passion for God – or the lack of it. To experience true intimacy with someone, you must be willing to sacrifice other things and give yourself fully to that person.

The psalmist wrote: ‘You have said, seek my face [inquire for and require my presence as your vital need]. My heart says to you, your face (your presence), Lord, will I seek, inquire for, and require [of necessity]’ (Psalm 27:8 AMP).

You’ll notice that the psalmist didn’t say you were to seek God’s gifts, but his face! Not the gifts, but the giver of the gifts! And a wonderful thing happens when you do that: ‘Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires and petitions of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him also and he will do it’ (Psalm 37:4-5 AMP).

Remain in his presence now and always…

  1. Great thoughts expressed simply on a soul-searching topic. The advice is most apt. When one seeks the face of God, every need is settled in His presence. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and every other thing will be added unto thee”. Thanks for the piece, friend.
