Making Excuses..

I have been struggling with words to better express how I feel on making excuses for a while now but today I found my a leveled ground or better yet my benchmark😊😊.

When I woke up this morning, I had a thousand and one reasons why I should not do the things I usually do every morning. I tried to make excuses that my body needed more sleep even though I went to bed early. I found reasons not to do my laundry “there’s still time”. I canceled my outing today with the excuse “my feet hurts”. I kept making excuses until I ran out of excuses. Ever being there?

But guess what? Every time we make excuses, we run and dodge away from our responsibilities. We end up doing what we shouldn’t do and then fail to do what we should do. The mess we make every time we make one excuse or the other is usually very hard to clean up. It’s very common for us to make excuses to cover up our mistakes but owning up to them and taking responsibility is a sign of growth both mentally, physically and spiritually.

Excuses puts a stop to every act of progress. Thank goodness I didn’t listen to the many excuses my brain was making for me. Though I didn’t go out(😊😊 not because my feet hurts) because I had my friends come over to the house, I did my laundry and every other thing I had set out to do. I lived up to my obligations and felt really good about it.

I believe the world would have been a better place if only Adam had owned up to his mistakes rather than make excuses and shift the blame to the woman he has been given. Eve also failed to accept that she had made a mistake and readily blamed the serpent – Genesis 3:10-14″.

When circumstances that surrounds our acts and other people’s actions we tend to excuse the behavior. For instance a day old baby that dies of a rare skin disease or a hole in the heart, we can readily excused but when we fail to lock up the doors before we go to sleep claiming “God is with us”, if we get robbed or get kidnapped in the process, we should be able to accept our mistakes and not blame anyone.

To be honest, it’s never an easy task accepting responsibility for one’s actions and admitting one’s mistakes or even acknowledging foolishness. I’m not sure there are many people who would willingly admit to making a mistake, own up to wrongdoing or take responsibility for their actions. It’s a lot safer and easier to make an excuse isn’t it? The first thought that crosses our mind when we make a mistake, “Is there anyone else I can blame?, ” What if I get reprimanded?, “Do I need to own up? Etc…

Instead of making excuses, how about standing up to our obligations and mistakes and become more competent, reliable and trustworthy!

    1. Most definitely chilavert.. Being a better person doesn’t mean being perfect. It means learning from our mistakes, moving in and making the best use of out of our time.

  1. excuse or an plausible reason to me are not interchangeable. sometimes we make plans that really are over ambitious. thus a reason to not be able to accomplish the plan, to me, is not an excuse. but an excuse is an attempt to cover up an error and not owning up to it.

    good post.

    1. You are right buddy and your last response corresponds with what Steven Grayhm said “Excuses are the tools with which persons with no purpose in view build for themselves great monuments of nothing.
It’s been a while, thanks for sharing.
      Have a good evening.

  2. Wow a nice entry again from my gold woman, excuse a bible to hordes of human beings, when they need your help … straight away and the other side welcome to the excuse reign… no time to you. I think excuse is a magnificent word to feeble citizens and living in a comfort zone and we’re living in the mother eart and moving … sometimes we’ve got shiny days as dark days and could be dark days… messages about excuses a brainstorming, when I heard …excuse I say pardon!

  3. Great post Whitney! It is so hard to own up to our mistakes and our actions…but it is so freeing when we can bring ourselves to do so. I have a friend who loves to say “Suck it up buttercup” In other words. Own up to what you have done.

    1. Smiles… Thanks Mrs Faye for sharing and yes, it’s much convenient to apportion blames rather than own up to our own mistakes.
The truth is mistakes are a fact of life. It is often the response to the error that counts but we fail to see it that way . Its always a pleasure hearing from you.

  4. Unfortunately, I yielded to my mind and body today when it told me to put off cleaning until later. I’m using my fatigue as an excuse, but I know what I’m doing now can wait until afterwards…oh wretched man that I am 🤦🏾‍♂️
