Pedophile : A Way Out…

The state of pedophile in the country is alarming and threatening and calls for immediate action and attention. Why so many child abuse in the land? Why are our children at the mercy of old men who should be protecting them? What crime has our little girls committed that they have to be subjected to such cruelty? Why is the society doing less or even nothing about it? Isn’t the law supposed to protect lives and properties any more? These and many more are the questions on the mind of the people especially here in Nigeria.

The sad news is that this week alone I have read and heard of alleged sexual misconduct by men of quite advanced age and children with less maturity(kids as a matter of fact). Since this issue of Pedophilia came into the public sphere, the Nigerian people has called for answers and of course the Nigeria police has launched a statutory inquiry into the situation but less success on the apprehension and prosecution of most of the culprits has been recorded.

Every day new cases arise, more children gets violated against their will. The same adults that warn and preach to them to abstain from participating in sexual acts of any sorts are the same ones that parpetrate the evil act. Let’s briefly see who a Pedophile is.
According to: : ” Pedophilia, or paedophilia, is a psychiatric disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children.[1][2] Although girls typically begin the process of puberty at age 10 or 11, and boys at age 11 or 12, criteria for pedophilia extend the cut-off point for prepubescence to age 13. A person who is diagnosed with pedophilia must be at least 16 years old, and at least five years older than the prepubescent child, for the attraction to be diagnosed as pedophilia

In popular usage, the word pedophilia is often applied to any sexual interest in children or the act of child sexual abuse. This use conflates the sexual attraction to prepubescent children with the act of child sexual abuse, and fails to distinguish between attraction to prepubescent and pubescent or post-pubescent minors. Researchers recommend that these imprecise uses be avoided, because although people who commit child sexual abuse are sometimes pedophiles, child sexual abuse offenders are not pedophiles unless they have a primary or exclusive sexual interest in prepubescent children, and some pedophiles do not molest children.”

Sadly, majority of pedophiles in Nigeria are male, that doesn’t negate the fact that there are no female pedophiles. There’s not enough evidence or record of female pedophiles. We can’t tell how many of the female pedophilles are out there but they exist. These pedophiles can be in all social class. It is not limited to one sphere alone. Research has shown that : most pedophiles have specific preferences for children of a certain demographics and who possess a particular physical traits. This could be their hair colors, facial appearance, stature, and sometimes their voice. While many others just don’t care about any of the aforementioned.

There are also different types of pedophiles : there are those that are exclusively attracted to children(females), those who prefer children but also get attracted to teens and adults, and those who prefer adults but can’t help the attraction to children.

Causes: Friedrich Nietzsche- ” He who has a why to live can bear almost any how. There are many factors that could be said to be reasons why people commit this act:

  1. Sexually abused(Psychological) : 70% of pedophiles have been at one point in their lives abused either by their own parents, siblings, relatives or friends. They could not confide in anyone and the society provided little or less security for them. Most of them got too paralyzed in a cloud of fear to even think about escaping or talking about it and so they lived without it. More importantly, they are convinced that it was all their fault and that they deserved it. These victims grow up angry, repressed, prone to violence and ready to revenge. Consciously they walk and act normal but subconsciously they are nothing but tickling time bombs waiting to explode.
Only very few of them get the required help they needed.
  2. Spiritual Affiliation(Religion) : Karl Marx-” Religion is the opium of the people” . Most pedophiles have spiritual backings or reasons. One reported to have been asked by his spiritual leader to have sexual intercourse with a 4year old girl to secure his wealth and elongate his life span. If they would be caught or the aftermath it would have on the child is less their concern. They are driven by some will-power to religiously obey their religious beliefs and get their expectations.

  3. Societal Norm(Lack of justice):A crown is no cure for headaches“. When the society fails to show justice in the land, the land becomes a nesting ground for preys and violence –Whitney Edna Ibe. Most of the alleged culprits never gets tried nor convicted. The story gets swept under the carpet especially “if they have any oga at the top”. The victims and their families gets threatened if they speak out of fail to drop the case. When this happens, evil becomes good and good becomes overrated. Pedophiles thrive in such environments and many others develop the interests as well.

Symptoms of Pedophile :

  1. Lack of empathy
  2. Finding children attractive
  3. Depravity
  4. Sociopaths
  5. Psychopath
  6. Pathological Lying
  7. Desire to rape anyone
  8. Desire for revenge
  9. Desire to sleep with anyone for any reason with less regards for their feelings

Acess To Children: Wondering how pedophiles get access to these children?
Pedophiles are not monsters with horns and long tails. They are men with blood in their veins. They think, strategize and re-strategize. They are geniuses in their own opinion and skin.
They have access to children by manipulating them, enticing them through what they like or lack, they pretend to care about them and what happens to them.
Oftentimes they go out of their ways to please the parents of the children to gain their trust and allow them access to their children. They act as their mentors or even their teachers.

Comebacks? Are They Likely To Try Again After Being Caught? :
Yes. Yiddish-” Money buys everything but good sense”. Not everyone has the sense to differentiate what’s good from what’s bad. Some will tell you “I see nothing wrong or bad in what I do or did as long as
I didn’t hurt anyone nor did my conscience pick”. Leaving right or wrong to our conscience can be questionable as there are many factors that guide our consciences. People like this are bound to repeat their crimes.

Secondly people with religious or spiritual reasons or affiliations are likely to continue in their acts. To them there is some sort of religious backings and influence prerequisite to their actions.
Lastly, less convictions of those found guilty by the law and the society.

The Aftermath : DR Seuss – “A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
Our children are the victims of these sick and demented people. No matter how weak their voices are, we shouldn’t let them loose it before we realize they’ve been screaming for help. They need us! Our girls are the hope of a better future, let’s protect them. Our sons are the warriors that would gallantly protect our lands, let’s train them right. We are the better society we dream of and pray for. Let’s do things right and as Xanthe Mallett rightly said – “_90% of children are sexually abused by somebody they know, rather than 90% of sexually abused children”.
Let’s keep a close watch on our children before they slip away from us!

    1. I totally understand Sean. No sane person would stand the thought of these evil much less allow it.
It’s really a sad situation but I’m very sure the culprits will get the punishment they deserve sooner than later.

  3. This is an issue that really hurts my heart Whitney. We should be protecting these little ones instead of letting them be exploited. It does seem like nothing is being done about it but I am confident that God will have His say in His time and there will be justice for those little ones.

    1. I agree with you Ma’am. Let’s continue to seek the face of God and also continue to protect our girls to the best of our abilities.
Thank you very much Ma’am for reading through and sharing your insights with us. ❀️
